The cliche girls night out has always come across as a little cheesy to me, so I was a bit hesitant to sit through Girls Night: The Musical, showing at the Bolton Theatre at the Cleveland Play House.
So to start the night off, my friend and I decided to arm ourselves with a few drinks at Stages, the restaurant and bar conveniently located in the Cleveland Play House. It's a bit stiff inside, with a piano player and a slightly older crowd, but definitely an enjoyable spot to stop before a show for dinner or cocktails.
Heading into the lobby, I felt as if I had walked into an estrogen sponsored arena. There were female vendors lined up on all sides of the lobby selling jewelry, face products, spa packages and purses. There were hot pink feather boas for sale and cosmopolitan deals. It was the epitome of an eight year old girl's dreamed up version of what adult female life is like.
A little much, yes. But if anything, this experience will put a smile on your face. How can you not get a kick out of your usher dancing you to your seat? And it seems as if the feeling is contagious. The medium sized theater was filled to the brim with women dancing and singing to their favorite love ballads.
Singing? Dancing? Love Ballads?
Imagine this if you can: Sex in the City meets Desperate Housewives. Then, throw in Grease as an offbeat third ingredient and you've got Girls Night: The Musical.
The plot is centered on five thirtyish-something friends...normal enough. Aside from the fact that one of them is dead, and appears in the play as an unseen angel, fully clad in glittering white denim and wings. Sharon (energetically played by Crystal Kellogg) narrates the entire time, providing flashbacks into the lives of all five women.
The living ladies are out for a night of karaoke and the tried and true (and a bit tired) dialogue of man bashing, child birth and a few pretty vulgar jokes come into play. This is all accomplished while the actresses dramatically belt out songs such as Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, I Will Survive, I'm Every Woman and We Are Family. In fact, I Will Survive is in there twice, both times compelling every woman in the audience to get up and dance.
With all of its pink, peppy singing and dancing, the musical also incorporates depressing themes such as divorce, infidelity and mental illness - like I said, there's a dead friend narrating. With the candy sweet theme the show has going, these issues seem strangely out of place.
Still, the musical has components of a successful night out: Cocktails (you can pre-order so you'll have your drinks ready and waiting for you at intermission), plenty of music and quite a few laughs. If you intend to go, do yourself a favor and leave your boyfriend - or any male you slightly respect - at home. The audience was 100% female, so bring a friend who's not afraid to act like a girly fool for the night.
Girls Night: The Musical runs now until July 6th at the Bolton Theatre located in the Cleveland Play House.
